It was 1985. I was thirteen, and I would be starting high school soon. I was at a friend's house for the weekend and we were heading for the movies. We were going to see some raucous blow 'em type film but it was sold out. The Breakfast Club was showing and hey, at least it had Molly Ringwold going for it. I went in to see Molly and hear a good soundtrack. I came out with a crush on Ally Sheedy and wanted to be Judd Nelson. "Bender" has to be one of the top 5 characters from the 80's.
It was an amazing movie and still is. VH1 is showing it this weekend and I've been watching it for the last couple of hours. Five kids, who couldn't be any different are shoved together on a Saturday for detention. You had a snotty rich girl, a jock, a hood, a nerd, and a freak. Their words for themselves in the paper they had to write that day were: a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. All of them were very different. The thing is, they were all broken in the same we all are at that age. Forced together for nine hours, they find this out in the end. They gather around in a circle on the floor and tell everyone who they are. I didn't realize it back in '85, but the ending was unbelievably hopeful. They showed up as five individuals and in the end they experience a kind of redemption and leave as the Breakfast Club.
I hope you've seen the movie, it's a classic. I hope you have a Breakfast Club.
