We have a great family and we can go great things for your church! My wife and I have been happily and faithfully married for 16 years now. We have three wonderful children who we love and cherish and can add much to your children’s programs! We are hard working, involved, and have many interests. We are an interracial couple who can help you with your diversity initiatives. We have been in the church most of our lives and have so much to offer. So, who wants us to come and add value to your church?
Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? I mean, selling ourselves this way is just crass wouldn’t you say? Not a thing there about Jesus and what it should all be about. So, why is it so many people put up with churches selling themselves to prospective members with glitz and glam and very little substance? Why do we put up with churches who tell us how great they are and what they can do for us while not being completely honest and acknowledging they don't really have it all together?
Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate sincere invitations to come to a church to just meet and be with people, but why are those kinds of invitations so few and far between? I am tired of hearing about your programs and facilities. I could care less that you have a kickin’ band and a hip young preacher. It doesn’t matter to me how tech savvy you are or how awesome your website is. That stuff just doesn’t matter.
So stop it. You are doing God a great disservice and a lot of us are over it. We aren’t looking for a place that can give us the best products and services. We don’t want a place that spends millions on buildings and a pittance on the poor in their communities. We don’t need hip and we don’t need cool. Bigger really isn’t better. Matter of fact, we have found it causes bigger problems.
Tell your people to go out and make friends first. Tell them to involve themselves with their communities and never mention your churches name. Tell them to do things in their everyday lives that make a difference and not to sell your church to people so you can have more bodies and more money.
Of course if they do that you may not get butts in the seats. It all makes sense to me now…
