So, I had the day off and was going to use it as one of those 'mental health' days. You know, sleep in, leave for lunch and spend the afternoon acting like there is no one else on the face of the earth. But, when I woke up, that just didn't seem quite the way things should go down. So, just before lunch, BeBe, Ricky and myself hit the road. They got to have BK for lunch and then a trip to Toy 'r' Us to spend a couple of gift cards. More than enough for a 4 and 6 year old on any given day. But hey, this was to be one of those days to remember. One for the ages! That was when I came up with the idea that we needed to go see Narnia.
Three theaters later we found one that was not sold out. I went in with hardly any expectations because I'd read so many contrarian reviews. Thank goodness I read them. The movie exceeded every expectation I had. I've read the books at least 5 times each so I had a very clear view in my head of how things should look. I was not let down. I was afraid Aslan's entrance wouldn't be very majestic having seen him in the commercials already. No sweat. His initial appearance was just fine. Ricky could hardly wait. "Daddy, where's the Lion?!" I responded "Soon, Beaver just said he's on the move." That was a little too fun to say, even if it was lost on a four year old.
The best part of the whole movie for me was Aslan's sacrifice and resurrection. BeBe was devastated when Aslan died. She wept and said "he can't be dead. he just can't be." When Aslan reappeared in all his glory she made another comment. "Hey, that's kinda like Jesus." As parents we often wonder just how well we are doing. Moments like these help. Big time.
Other highlights... the children were great and it was good to really SEE them as children. It can be easy to lose that view when reading. Mr. Tumnus was fantasic and Tilda Swinton nearly stole the whole thing as the White Witch. What else... I know, any of you other readers have that same feeling when you first saw the lampost as you did when you saw your first hobbit hole? You know, that feeling of being home? Oh, and anyone else find yourself thinking some of that Turkish Delight might be pretty good?
As we drove home B just went on and on about how it was the 'greatest movie she'd ever seen' and how she'd like to be friends Lucy. I thought it was a good movie too. But for me, it was an even greater day.
Derek saw it the week I was out of town and then dragged me to the movies when I got home. I was definitely incredible!
